The 40-and-over Masters Basketball League regular season wrapped up Thursday night with Dyno-Sores making sure Top Forty’s ended up with the worst record in the six-team rankings.

It took a while for Dyno-Sores to find its stride but the team would eventually pull its act together and defeated Top Forty’s, 73-64, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Top Forty’s seemed headed for an upset, and more importantly avoiding a first round collision with pennant champion Verizon, when Dyno-Sores was bogged down by an early scoring drought.

With Warren Villegas literally the only one scoring for Dyno-Sores, Top Forty’s grabbed a 14-9 spread after the opening quarter.

The second quarter was a scoring battle between Top Forty’s ace Oscar Masga and Villegas. But unlike the first quarter, Villegas this time got plenty of scoring support and that allowed Dyno-Sores to take the driver’s seat, 33-32, at the half.

It was still anybody’s ballgame in the third and fourth quarters, with Dyno-Sores getting a big lift with the arrival of defensive specialist Gilbert Espinosa.

Espinosa combined with the lightning-quick Villegas as Dyno-Sores extended its lead to 5 points, 52-47, heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Top Forty’s still had a chance at pulling the rug from under Dyno-Sores but Masga would sputter in the final 10 minutes and without its heart and soul, Top Forty’s surrendered the 9-point loss to Dyno-Sores.

Villegas led all scorers with 35 markers, while pint-sized playmaker Robert “Onyok” Tamondong and Espinosa chipped in 10 and 9 points, respectively.

The 22 points of Masga led Top Forty’s losing cause, while Jack Blanco added 10 points.

The MBL playoffs start next week with Verizon taking on Top Forty’s, Dyno-Sores squaring off against Old Aces, and CK Legends facing Dollar Days.

Dyno-Sores 73 – Villegas 35, Tamondong 10, Espinosa 9, Weaver 5, Nepaial 4, Valencia 4, Kramer 2.

Top Forty’s 64 – Masga 22, J. Blanco 10, De Leon Guerrero 9, D. Blanco 9, Aguon 8, Takai 6.

Scoring by quarters: 9-14, 33-32, 52-47, 73-64.
