Rai upsets Pirates in Rota Little League

In a jam-packed Liyo Field, Team Rai defeated the DPW Pirates, 6-2, in Monday’s Memorial Day Rota Little League Baseball championship game.

Jovaney Subediang pitched six strong innings, gave up 5 hits and walked 4 for Team Rai, while Freddy Yamada sent one out deep center and knocked in 3 runs. Joe Inas King also went 3-for-2 to propel Team Rai to the upset win against the pennant champions.

Immediately after the championship game, Rota Little League Baseball president, Rep. Cris Ogo, and CNMI Little League district administrator James Ada presented the trophies and medals to the deserving players, managers and coaches.

After Team Rai and the Pirates got their championship and runner-up trophies, Rota Little League awarded DPW with the regular season pennant championship, Team Rai with the pennant runner-up, and Sinpalo 49ers and the Giants got the second runner-up and third runner-up trophies, respectively.

In individual awards, Pirates’ John Ayuyu took home the strikeout leader award and Rai’s Joe Inas King bagged the regular season strikeout king award. Rai’s Alfreddy Yamada also received the award for hitting the most home runs in the championship series.

Ogo also lauded all the team sponsors for their contribution as well as recognizing all the people behind the success of the 2004 Rota Little League Baseball.

He thanked Team Rai sponsor, Thomas Blas, Jr., DPW Pirates’ Mr. and Mrs. John Ayuyu and Mayor Babauta of Agat, Guam, Giants’ Jose M. Rosario. The lawmaker was also the proud sponsor of the Sinapalo 49ers.

Other recognized were umpires led by Luis Mesa, Bonabe Maratita, Jose Mesa, Joe Rosario and Alvin Pinuala.

Perry Blas was also honored for doing a good job as field superintendent along with his crew composed of Royce Hocog and Oscar Quitugua II. Lucy Ann Santos, Barry Toves and Joreen Ayuyu were also given a big hand for keeping all the players’ records. League announcers Mike Ogo, Director John Ayuyu, Alvic King and Barry Toves were also acknowledged.

Aside from president Ogo, the board of directors of Rota Little League is made up of vice president John Ayuyu, secretary Fred Maratita, and treasurer Eleanor Taitano.
