Govt to build affordable homes
Residents without their own homes may soon avail of affordable houses once the bidding for the development of the government’s residential subdivision project is completed.
Five developers attended a pre-bid conference Friday for the construction of 128 single-family homes.
Gov. Juan N. Babauta’s Housing Task Force has identified a public land across the Saipan Southern High School in Koblerville for the housing project. Once the bid is awarded, the project’s completion may take only 600 days.
“Rather than just auctioning plots of land to people, we will create a neighborhood of quality homes that are affordable even to first-time homeowners,” Babauta said.
A person of Northern Marianas descent may avail of a housing unit through the Northern Marianas Housing Corp., which will conduct screening for eligibility.
“Potential homebuyers will be pre-qualified by the [NHMC], and all mortgages will be financed by a local banking institution, which will reimburse the developer for the cost of building the homes,” the task force said.
The housing project, which the task force developed, would include at least 128 housing units, with seven different floor plans to choose from. The project incorporates infrastructure for power, water and sewer line connections to each home.
The task force said the winning bidder would finance the project, but added that the government would pay for the infrastructure component of the project.
The task force advised those of NMI descent to watch for the announcement of the NMHC for interested homebuyers to file their application with the pubic corporation after the housing project contract is awarded to a bidder.
