SML Fall League resumes this weekend
Weekend mornings this autumn season will be filled with the sounds of the smacks and cracks of baseball, as the fall edition of the Saipan Major League will be implementing wooden and composite bats when the boys take the field this Saturday—just like the gods of baseball would have wanted it.
The nighttime fun has been traded for games under the sun due to the damage to the lighting array at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field during all of the stormy weather, and the opening ceremony will begin bright and early at 9:30am.
The opening game of the season will feature the defending champion Hustlers and the Pirates at 10am, followed by a contest between Kautz Glass and the Northern Stars. According to league coordinator Tony Rogolifoi, all teams must be present, and Sunday’s game will be announced this coming Friday.
According to Rogolifoi, the wooden and composite bats are the only type that will be allowed under the rules of the Baseball Confederation of Oceania in next year’s South Pacific Mini Games in Palau, and the SML will be selling wooden bats for $40 to $50 each.
As a reminder, all teams are required to wear the same color hats and jerseys for the games; however, the baseball pants worn are not required to match the color scheme.
Only individuals between the ages of 16 and 25 may play in the league, and teams will have to submit their complete roster to league officials by Friday, Sept. 24. In addition to the roster, teams must submit the $1,200 registration fee made payable to the Saipan Major League, along with the insurance fee of $15 per player or a copy of the player’s health insurance card. New players will have to provide copies of their birth certificate or passports by Friday as well.
There will be an umpires meeting tomorrow in the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium at 6pm. For further information, contact Rogolifoi by calling him at 664-2508.
