The week of October 3-9, 2004 has been designated as the CNMI/American Public Power Week in order to honor the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. for its contributions to the community and to make its consumer-owners, policymakers, and employees more aware of its overall contributions to their well-being.

During this week, the local community joins hands with more than 2,000 other public power systems in the United States to celebrate local, community-ownership and economical cost of service for electricity.

On Sunday, Oct. 3, CUC will start with a Mass at the San Antonio Church at 8am. This will follow the week with school presentations to raise awareness among the youth and educate them on electrical safety, and how power is generated and distributed to homes and places of business.

These presentations, CUC said, are on high demand every year at various public schools, including Dandan, San Vicente, Koblerville, Kagman, San Antonio, Tanapag, Gregorio T. Camacho, William S. Reyes, Oleai, and Garapan elementary schools. Presentations on the islands of Rota and Tinian will be conducted as well.

On Saturday, Oct. 9, CUC plans a Lineman’s Rodeo at the Garapan Fishing Basin starting with a motorcade at 8am from As Lito (CUC parking lot) ending at 8:45am at the basin and continuing with the ceremony and games from 9am through 4pm.

A five to six lineman teams will be participating from CUC Rota, Tinian, Saipan, Guam Power Authority including a private company, Kimco Enterprises.

The teams will compete in five events: pole climbing race, material handling contest, lineman basketball game, pole framing, and transformer installation contests.

Also the Lineman Rodeo event will have bucket rides, auger truck and boom truck demonstrations. The CUC Power Division will have exhibits on energizing utility, power tools and educations fact-sheets on public power.

On behalf of the CUC Power Division, executive director Lorraine Babauta and members of the board of directors the public is invited to attend the 3rd Annual CNMI American Public Power Week/Lineman Rodeo events.
