World War II veterans who returned to the CNMI for the 60th commemoration of the Battles for Saipan and Tinian will be receiving a special gift in the mail.

A copy of the student-produced book We Drank Our Tears: Memories of the Battles have been sent to each veteran as a remembrance of their visit.

We Drank Our Tears student writers Joshua Diaz, Elijah Ilo Elidchedong and Julian Sablan from Dandan Elementary assisted Jessica Jordan, 60th anniversary event coordinator, and Katharyn Tuten-Puckett, director of the Pacific STAR Center for Young Writers, in preparing the packages to the veterans.

“It is our way of saying thank-you to these veterans for their service and sacrifices during the second World War,” said Anicia Q. Tomokane, president of the Pacific STAR Young Writers’ Foundation and sponsor of the mailing.

We Drank Our Tears can be purchased at Bestsellers Bookstore, Joeten Susupe, the CNMI Museum, Esco’s Market, and Dandan Elementary School.
