Teams that were favored emerged victorious in all of the games played in the sand court behind the Pacific Islands Club Tuesday night–with the exception of one.

Things were going as scheduled in the first three games of the night, as the Dolphins of Marianas High School (7-3) downed Team Papalatung (0-8), Shoot The Winkle (5-5) swept Esemuoel (0-8), and Bend It Like Megan (6-1) baked the Clam Smackers (3-6) in the continuation of the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League.

The smell of an upset filled the air in the fourth game of the evening when the 5-2 Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You took the court against the 6-1 Dragon Flares. Having only lost in their first game of the season against the Sleezy Lambleezies (6-1), the Flares were riding the wave of a five-game win streak entering the game. The Tom Braiders were on a three-game tear, and likewise they had fallen to the Sleezy Lambleezies and the first place Flush It! (8-0).

Captained by Kevin Carey, the Tom Braiders jumped out to an early 11-5 win in the first set and never looked back. Before the Dragon Flares knew what had hit them, they were halfway through the second set and sinking fast. The Braiders took the second set with a bit less resistance at 11-4 to officially get the win for the night.

With two sets in the bag, the pressure was off of the Tom Braiders, and they were able to play a relaxed third set. The Dragon Flares were a bit more focused and played a much closer third set, but they weren’t able to get the win in the 11-8 loss.

The win evened the records of both teams at 6-2, but the Dragon Flares are in fourth place ahead of Tell The Tom Braider Sent You because they have 216 points for and 186 points against compared to the Braiders’ 200 and 196.

The Dragon Flares are back in action next Tuesday, Nov. 16 when they try to peel the Bananas at 6pm, while Tell Them Tom Braider Sent You returns to the sand tonight against one of the nicest teams in the league, Esemuoel (0-8) at 8pm.

Tonight’s action will also feature First place Flush It! and second place Bend It Like Megan in a head-to-head match up that could put the Megan’s within reach of the regular season title with a month remaining in the season.

The highly anticipated showdown will be served up at 7pm, following the contest of the Dolphins and the Sleezy Lambleezies at 6pm. Fans who stick around for the 9pm game will be rewarded with a high-powered sand blasting between the 1-5 Bill Bratzski’s and the 0-8 Machigainai!.

All the side-outs you can handle will be doled out again tonight at the PIC. If you would like further information about the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League, contact Jon, Evan, Dennis, or Nan by calling the SEA office at 235-6231 ext. 5147.
