Tudela wants law vs illegal cockfighting enforced
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela said that his office will set up a meeting with the Department of Public Safety regarding the enforcement of Public Law 9-8, which prohibits cockfighting without required authorization from his office.
“I already spoke with the commissioner [Santiago Tudela] of DPS and he told me to let him know when we can meet,” he said. “I am going to set a meeting with him and see how he can help with the enforcement of that law. Maybe police patrol can watch for illegal cockfighters.”
Mayor Tudela said he has seen cockfighting in different areas but is not certain if illegal acts are taking place or if roosters were just being trained for action.
“I’ve seen around the island that there’s people playing cockfight, and I don’t know if they’re playing for money or if they’re just practicing the rooster, but I just want to remind the public that the only authorized operator for cockfighting activities on Saipan is the Saipan Cockpit on Chalan Pale Arnold in Garapan.”
“All other operators (except those holding a temporary letter of authorization) are operating illegally,” he added.
Any person who violates any provision of Saipan Local Law 9-8, the Saipan Cockfighting Act, shall be fined not more than $600, or be imprisoned not more than three months, or both. (Shan Seman)
