Vice Speaker Timothy P. Villagomez formally announced before family members yesterday his decision to run as Lt. Governor with Covenant Party’s gubernatorial candidate Benigno R. Fitial.

“Today is a very special day because it’s the day I’m letting my family know that I am accepting Speaker Fitial’s [offer] to be his running mate,” said Villagomez during a family picnic at Kilili Beach in Susupe yesterday.

Over a week ago, it was Fitial who held a family gathering at PaoPao Beach to announce his candidacy.

Party supporters view the holding of both gatherings as a show of support from the two cultural groups: Carolinians from the side of Fitial and the Chamorros from the side of Villagomez.

“It’s a winning team because they’ve got the support of both sides,” said a supporter.

Villagomez, meantime, said that with the support of the Villagomez clan, “I’m looking forward to a very successful general elections next year.”

The vice speaker’s father, Dr. Jose Villagomez, showed up briefly at yesterday’s family event.

Other family members present included his brother, former Public Health Secretary Kevin Villagomez, and several cousins and relatives from the Villagomez and Pangelinan side.

People cheered Fitial and Villagomez as they shouted the tandem’s slogan: “Ben and Tim for better times, better things, better tomorrow.”

The two said that their administration would prioritize economic development, education, and environmental protection.

“We want to focus on how to bring in new money into the Commonwealth and how to make the businesses, the existing businesses, feel they are important and know that they can depend on the government for assistance,” Fitial said.

The Covenant Party, which was formed in 2001, is currently headed by acting party chair John Del Rosario.
