The best and brightest in sports made it to the headlines last week.

In the Commonwealth Football League, the Miller Lite Barbarians escaped the noose prepared by the Verizon Nitro on a last-second punt return by Syl Teregeyo last Nov. 6 at the CPA Airport Field.

In the waters off Micro Beach last weekend, Japan’s Shoiichi Niikura won the men’s open division of the 3rd Annual Marianas Cup. Also taking home first place were Niikura’s countrymen Takeshi Miyashita, who won in the master’s category, and Sachiko Shibazaki, who held her own in the women’s division.

Ghasias Brothers also scored its second straight World Organized Rocball Interscholastic and Community League championship after vanquishing Shag in double O-kon last Wednesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium. Ghasias won the finals three games to one.

The last undefeated team in the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League, meanwhile, met its match Thursday night after it lost to Bend It Like Megan in three straight sets at sand court at the Pacific Islands Club.
