The Saipan Mayor’s Office, in partnership with non-profit organization Karidat, is encouraging the community to take part in its “Feed Saipan Thursday” today—an event dedicated to casting light on the plight of the poor, hungry, and the homeless.

The event, recently recognized during a proclamation ceremony at the Mayor’s Office, calls for the community to fast and donate funds for the poor.

People are urged to fast for two meals on this day and donate the money they would have spent for the two meals to Karidat “for the purpose of feeding the hungry.”

“The purpose of this is to remember the hungry, the poor, and the homeless in our community and the entire CNMI,” said Saipan Mayor’s Office staff Tony Benavente. “Let’s not forget those going through these throughout the world.”

Aside from monetary donations, other contributions such as food, commodities, milk, and clothes are also welcome.

Benavente said donations could be made to the Saipan Mayor’s Office at the Afetnas Square in San Antonio.

He said the office annually heads the event a week before Thanksgiving.

“Thanksgiving Day celebrates the spirit of selfless giving and an appreciation for family and friends,” the proclamation reads.

According to the proclamation, 33 million Americans, including 13 million children, live in households without an adequate supply of food. Three million children also experience hunger everyday, as well as hundreds of island residents.

“Selfless sacrifice breeds a genuine spirit of Thanksgiving, both affirming and restoring fundamental principles in our society,” the proclamation read.
