The Col. Joel A. Carroll, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund has chosen the five students who will receive scholarship monies from the memorial fund, according to a statement released yesterday.

The scholarship fund’s board of directors reviewed 14 applications for scholarship and has selected the top five applicants based on criteria established by the board.

These applicants are graduates of high schools in the CNMI, and have been accepted by an accredited college/university.

Chosen to receive the award are:

* Dean Jesse Palacios (Engineering)
* Vincent Castro (Engineering)
* Angel C. Falig Jr. (Engineering)
* Charles Cruz (Natural Resources Management)
* Benjamin M. Jones Jr. (Forensic Science)

Presentation of the awards to these recipients will be on Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at 10am, at the District Office of the Resident Representative to the United States on Capitol Hill, Saipan. Parents or sponsors are welcomed to attend.

“The board of directors wishes to express its appreciation to all 14 applicants; and for their interest in the Col. Joel A. Caroll, Jr. Memorial Scholarship and striving for academic advancement. The board encourages all to continue in their pursuit of higher education,” a part of the statement reads. “The Board congratulates the five recipients of the awards, and their parents, and wishes all of them success in their endeavors.”

Besides being graduates from the CNMI and acceptance to a college or university, applicants for the scholarship grant must also be citizens or nationals of the United States. While academic standing in high school is highly regarded as criteria for selection, a major in Health, or Science, or Engineering is considered highly significant and carries a lot of weight in final selection.
