Details of Mini Games events out

With the countdown to the 7th South Pacific Mini Games a mere eight months away, Palau has released the particulars of the 12 sports up for grabs from July 25 to Aug. 4 in Koror.

Athletics will have a total of 15 running events and seven field events. The running events are made up of the 100-meter, 200m, and 400m dash, 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m, and 10,000m run, half marathon (run off the track), 100m hurdles (women only), 400m hurdles, 4x100m relay, pentathlon (men only), and heptathlon (women only).

The seven field events are the shot put, hammer throw, javelin, long jump, high jump, and triple jump.

In basketball and baseball, rules and regulations of the International Basketball Federation and International Baseball, respectively, “will be followed and strictly adhered to.”

The same with men’s and women’s fast pitch softball, where the rules and regulations of the International Softball Federation will be implemented.

Beach volleyball will be conducted under International Federation rules and regulations and those outlined in the South Pacific Games charter.

Six events, meanwhile, are slated in outrigger canoe: V1 500m men and women, V1 250m men and women, V6 500m men and women, V6 2,500m men and women V6 15 kilometers, and V6 25kms. Rules and regulations of the IVF will be used during the races.

Participating counties in swimming are limited to two swimmers per event with the exception of relay events, where entries are limited to one per country.

A total of 15 events for both men and women will be contested in the pool. They are 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle, 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke, 50m, 100m, and 200m breastroke, 50m, 100m, and 200m butterfly, 100m and 200m individual medley, and medley relays for both the men and women.

Additionally, Palau will also be conducting a 5km open ocean swim for both men and women. All the swimming events will be conducted under FINA rules.

Table tennis will feature five divisions—men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. All matches will be conducted under the rules and regulations of the International Table Tennis Federation.

Aside from International Tennis Federation, play in lawn tennis would also be governed by the rules and regulations of the SPG charter. Five events will be contested in the sport namely men’s team, women’s team, men’s singles, women’s singles, and doubles.

Entries in the men’s and women’s team competitions must have two singles players and one doubles team each. Participating countries, meanwhile, could field as much as three players in the singles events. The doubles event can also have as much as three teams coming from one delegation.

Triathlon will be held under the rules of the International Triathlon Union. The distance agreed upon for the event is a 1km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run.

Weightlifting is looking at 15 weight divisions for both men and women. The men will have eight weight divisions—56 kilograms, 62kg, 69kg, 77kg, 85kg, 94kg, 105kg, and 105+kg. The seven weight divisions for women are 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 75kg, and 75+kg.

Wrestling is one up over weightlifting with 16 classes in the men’s senior and men’s junior categories. The senior division will have weight classes in the 50-55kg, 60kg, 66kg, 74kg, 84kg, 96kg, and 120kg ranges. Junior weightlifters will have nine, namely the 46-50kg, 54kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 76kg, 85kg, 97kg, and 120kg divisions.
