As the fourth season of local style football makes its transition to the playoffs, the goal of all of the players and coaches of the Commonwealth Football League is to be crowned as champions.

This year; however, there will be more on the table for the winner of the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 27 than bragging rights, as the CFL champs will represent the CNMI in a showdown with coach Raymond Souza and the best from Guam.

The CNMI will be able to put its best foot forward, as the winning coach may choose to invite additional players. The choice will be made at the sole discretion of the winning coaching staff.

The 10-yard fight between Guam and the CNMI dates back to the first game played between the teams back on March 11, 2000. The “Marianas Bowl” featured the first adult football team from the CNMI facing off against the Guam All-Stars from the Miller Football League.

Though the outcome wasn’t in favor of the CNMI Warriors, it generated a new level of interest for the sport among the islands.

As of yet there has been no date scheduled for the inter-island clash, but the Miller Barbarians and the Verizon Nitro begin the march to the CFL finals tomorrow, Nov. 20, at 10am in their one game playoff at the CPA Airport field. The winner earns the right to take on the Shell Chiefs in the championship the following weekend on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 10am.
