The island was overrun by sports activities the past week.

It began Saturday with swimming at the Kan Pacific Swimming Pool, where the Saipan Swim Club held its 2004 All Schools Swimming Championships. While Whispering Palms School and Saipan International School retained their titles in the elementary and junior high divisions, Marianas Baptist School emerged as the new power in the high school ranks.

Later in the afternoon, Miller Lite Barbarians ended the regular season with a win over Verizon Nitro in the 2004 Commonwealth Football League at the CPA Airport Field.

A few hours later, the who’s who in the island’s track and field list competed in the 2004 All School Cross Country Championships in the same area.

The weekend baseball results, meanwhile, saw North Stars and Kautz Glass Glazers win their Saturday match ups against the Pirates and Hustlers. Glazers returned to the baseball diamond the next day and closed out the Pirates in a continued game.

In tennis, Ralph and younger brother Russell dominated the 2004 NMITA Fall Classic Tennis Championships after winning the boy’s 18-and-under and 14-and-under divisions, respectively. Joseph Motto, Jr. reigned supreme in the boy’s 10-and-under, while Audrey Motto and Thea Minor held court in the girl’s 18-and-under and 14-and-under age groups.

On Tuesday, NMC/Saipancell Proa annexed the pennant championship of the 2004 Men’s Island Wide Fast Pitch Softball League after raising their record to 11-1 following a win over the D9ers.

In basketball, Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, Department of Labor, and Public School System marched to their third straight wins, san a defeat, in the 2004 Government Basketball League last week.

Volleyball also saw plenty of action with the 6th Annual Miller 4-Person Beach Volleyball League and the 2004-2005 Island Wide Men’s and Women’s Volleyball League keeping the island’s top spikers busy at the Pacific Islands Club sand courts and the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
