A proposal is expected to be forwarded to the Legislature designating the Civic Center Complex in Susupe as a historical landmark, citing the area as the location of the first governor’s office of the Commonwealth.

This is according to a letter to Rep. Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero, which indicated the proposal’s support from local historian Genevieve Cabrera of the Historical Preservation Office and Dr. Jack Angello, paralegal to the Attorney General Office Criminal Division.

The draft said that the Civic Center Complex, now home to the AG Criminal Division and other offices as well, should be “preserved and maintained in a suitable manner.”

“The historical significance of this Civic Center Complex is monumental in the birth and early life of the Commonwealth,” a part of the resolution stated. “The Civic Center Complex is currently in severe disrepair and should be maintained in a proper manner suited to its historical importance.”

The draft further indicated that the House should establish a supplemental funding amount to assist in the annual upkeep of the complex.

“The House recognizes the historical importance of the United States Government and the U.S. Congress in the formation of the Commonwealth and requests the federal government to assist the Commonwealth in the preservation of the Civic Center Complex,” the resolution stated.

The original governor’s office and the building for the lieutenant governor stood in the area in 1978.

The proposal has yet to be transmitted to the Legislature and could be modified by Guerrero prior to introduction.

“We both felt that your past experience as the HPO director will be of valuable assistance in our quest to have the [complex] preserved and maintained in a suitable manner,” Angello said in the letter to Guerrero.
