Council lauds Charlie Cat boat team
Charlie Cat boat (Guam Team) captain Dr. Hoa Van Nguyen and anglers Jesus Curo and Quane Ly were recently recognized for capturing the grand prize, the third place bill fish category, and the total weight category at the 20th annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament held last September.
The Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council passed a resolution praising Van Nguyen and his anglers for their successful efforts during the tournament.
Van Nguyen’s team caught a monster marlin at 519.40 lbs, winning for themselves $10,000. They also placed third in the bill fish category at 129.19 lbs, getting the $1,500 cash prize; and the total weight category at 370.77 lbs, for a $2,500 cash prize.
Grand V’s boat captain Ray Dela Cruz and anglers Joe Guerrero and Joe Reyes caught the biggest/heaviest yellowfin at 55.07 lbs.
Despite these, Danny Agulto’s record in the bill fish category in 1997 at 624.43 lbs, and James Taitano’s record in the yellowfin category in 1990 at 106 lbs remained the standing records to break.
The 20th annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament finally kicked off on Sept. 11, 2004, at Saipan Smiling Cove Marina after being postponed due to Supertyphoon Chaba. Ninety-four boats from Palau, Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan participated in the challenge to catch the winning prizes in each category before the time deadline on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004.
“The members of the municipal council and the people of the CNMI join John M. San Nicolas, president, and the Saipan Fishing Association members in extending special recognition, congratulation and commendation to…the Charlie Cat Boa [team] for capturing the grand prize and other awards and wish them the best as they prepare for the 21st Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament,” part of the resolution reads.
The resolution was certified by chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
