Sonny Flores and Masood Karimipour proved to be the team to beat in the Refaluwasch Golf Association’s Two-Man Best Ball Tournament held last Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Coral Ocean Point Resort golf course.

The Dynamic Duo smoked the competition, firing a net score of 55.5. Flores and Karimipour carded a gross score of even par 72—after going 36 in the front and the same score in the back—but had a superior handicap of 17.5 to take the top plum.

Finishing second in the inaugural tournament of RGA for 2005 was the pair of Eddie Peter and Jordan Kosam, who came up with a 58.5 net. Peter and Kosam had a gross score of 71 and 13.5 handicap.

Despite firing a second best gross score of four-under par 68, Nick Sablan and his partner Joe Demapan had to settle for third place because of their higher net score of 60. Sablan and Demapan played with an 8 handicap.

Flores and Karimipour earned $150 for their win, while Peter and Kosam and Sablan and Demapan went home with $125 and $100, respectively, for their runner-up finishes.

Caught on the outside looking in were Tony Satur and Tony Camacho (60.5 net), Ed Kapileo and Joe Wabol (61), Andy Nepaial and Jess Wabol (62), Ben Jones and Joe “Kamikaze” Camacho (63), and Ben Jones and Manny Alvarez (64).

An eighth team made up of Sasaki Oliver and himself (He didn’t have a partner and had to pay RGA extra to get consideration) finished with a net 66 after going 32 in the front and 34 at the back for a 66 gross.

In the closet to the pin contests, Oliver and Oliver took the honor on hole No. 3. Jones and Camacho were tops on hole No. 7. Sablan and Demapan came nearest on hole No. 12, while Wabol and Nepaial put everyone to shame on hole No. 14.

Next up for RGA players is the club’s January Ace of the Month Tournament set for tomorrow, Jan. 22, at the Coral Ocean Point golf course.

Check in time is set at 11:30am with tee off scheduled an hour later at 12:30pm. Tournament fee is $30 and slots for 16 players are available.

RGA president Jess Wabol also said that the club is entertaining new members at the start of the year. Membership fee is $50, which is the same cost for renewals.

The membership fee covers the period from January to December. Wabol is also reminding current RGA members to take care of their membership dues as early as possible.
