Some thoughts on the ‘holidays’ issue

There is much debate over federal vs. local holidays, focused mainly on Martin Luther King Jr. and the need for three local “C” holidays. Although I agree that MLK Jr. should be honored throughout the United States and its territories, I just wanted to clarify something.

I’ve worked stateside for three years now. Of those three years, I reported to work at a school on Presidents’ Day, and my kids were required to attend school as well. This happened in a school district outside a military base.

So, no, federal holidays are not religiously honored throughout the United States. Fact is, if you check school calendars on the Internet, there are schools on the mainland that hold classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and will also hold classes on Presidents’ Day.
