Action picks up
While the Island Wide Fast Pitch League kicked off its finals, action in the 2004 Government Basketball League also heated up with the start of the playoffs last week.
The Saipan Softball Association-organized fast pitch competition is down to the final two teams—the D9ers and the Saipancell/NMC Proa—with the latter getting a head in their best-of-three championship with a 14-7 win Wednesday night at the Oleai Sports Complex. The result of Game 2 Friday was still not available as of press time.
Over in the 2004 Government Basketball League, four teams are in and four teams are out as the playoffs started Monday.
On Monday, Department of Labor downed Commonwealth Ports Authority, 101-67, in the first game and Department of Public Safety I ended the reign of defending champion Northern Marianas College, 102-95, in the second.
On Wednesday, it was the turn of Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and DPS II to advance as they downed Office of Public Auditor (94-86) and Commonwealth Health Center (84-63), respectively.
Monday also saw the Saipan Bowling Association hold its first Pepsi King and Queen of the Lanes Bowling Tournament of the year.
Simon Manacop repeated as January King of the Lanes, while Lynn Teregeyo out-bowled everyone in the women’s division and was crowned Queen of the Lanes.
Three days earlier, the SBC/J’s Restaurant players received their the championship trophies for the 31st season of the Philippine Bowling Association Saturday League.
The week also saw varsity players from Japan’s Josai University return to Saipan for the 16th time for spring training and Reuters Raiders Extreme Speedball hold its first 3-Man Paintball Tournament at As Matuis.
