18 firefighters finish ARFF training course
Eighteen firefighters—seven from the CNMI and 11 from other Pacific jurisdictions—will be taking the stage as the first graduating class of the new Pacific Region ARFF Training Center this Friday.
The new firefighters—two from the Republic of Palau, six from the Federated States of Micronesia, and three from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, as well as seven from the Commonwealth Ports Authority’s Airport Rescue and Firefighting Facility—finished the First Basic Firefighting and ARFF course held at the center.
A special ceremony will take place at the Airport Fire Station on Friday, March 11, at 11am to commemorate this graduation event.
After four weeks of classroom and hands-on live fire training, the students successfully completed 120 hours of Basic Firefighting and 40 hours of Basic Airport Firefighting training course. The training was conducted through the Northern Mariana College using Fire Instructors from Saipan ARFF and Guam ARFF.
All the participants, after successfully completing the course, shall receive Firefighter I certification through the National Fire Service Board on Professional Qualifications, also known as the Pro-Board.
Students received their hands-on training using the new multi-million state-of-the-art Aircraft mock-up at the ARFF training facility, which allows them to fight realistic fires scenarios, but in a safe and controlled manner.
“This event will mark a great moment in the CNMI history, as Saipan officially becomes the center for aircraft rescue and fire fighting training for all firefighters in the Western Pacific region,” CPA said in a statement.
The Pacific Region ARFF Training Center has been a three-year long project of CPA to help train airport firefighters from the CNMI, Guam, Palau, FSM and the Republic of the Marshall. The training program is designed to assist all airports and firefighters to comply with all FAA requirements. The Pacific Region ARFF Training Center was fully funded from AIP grants of the FAA. (PR)
