Team Hagga n of Guam emerged from a pack of six teams to take the women’s division of the 15th Annual Jam Attack yesterday afternoon by sweeping fellow Guamanians Isa in straight sets, 25-21 and 25-11, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

Led by Coach Shelly Taisipic, Haggan cruised through the two-day tournament without a care on Saturday morning before entering the playoff round as the favorite for the finals yesterday. Haggan first dispatched local team T-8 in straight sets 25-16 and 25-6 to assure them of a spot in the championship game, and simply waited for their challengers to battle it out.

Isa first made quick work of the local players from the She Devils, but the She Devils forced a rematch after they downed T-8 in the losers’ bracket just as quickly. Unfortunately for the She Devils, their revenge was never realized, as they fell anew to Isa 19-14 and 21-17 to finish with a respectable third place.

After a close game of back and forth scoring in the first set of the all-Guam final, Haggan gained the advantage by eking out a four point victory. They rode the momentum into the second set where they overwhelmed their fellow islanders with a flurry of spikes in the 25-11 clincher.

This edition of the Haggan team, made up of Taisipic, Sharon del Mundo, Lucia Calvo, Becky Salas, Francine Hoebing, Mie Rabago, Leslie Hamrick, and Kathy Topasna, took leave of their familiar stomping grounds of the Agana Heights Gym in Guam to make its first off-island trip solely for the Jam Attack.

The good news for the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association is that they plan on returning next year as well.

“This was really nice to come out to because, aside from the SPGs, we haven’t played off-island since the Haili tournament in Hilo, HI sometime around 2000. We’ll be back next year too,” said Haggan team appointed most valuable player del Mundo.
