SKN, Mwaliyas begin fight for WOR crown
All the wins and losses from the regular round will be thrown out the window as a new round kicks off in the World Organized Rocball High School League.
SKN posted a league-best 5-2 win-loss record in the regular season, which includes punching out two wins against Mwaliyas, but none of that will count when both teams begin their push for the coveted crown with a zero on their win columns.
The two will go face to face in a best of five championship series, with the first match scheduled to serve up at 12:30pm today at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The only two times SKN took on Mwaliyas in the regular season were tough battles, with the fourth set in each match being the decider.
In their first contest last Feb. 17, the two teams exchanged mighty blows in a tight contest until SKN kicked into higher gear in the fourth set to put up a 41-35 victory.
SKN led only by two points, 23-21, after the first two sets, but Mwaliyas came back strong and took the third set, 11-7, to go up 32-30, before struggling in the fourth set, which ended with SKN taking the win, 11-3.
The two teams tangoed again to the same tune on March 16 with SKN squeezing by again due to a better performance in the final set of regulation.
After a thrilling 11-10 win in the first set, SKN widened their gap with an easy 15-8 win. Mwaliyas, however, proved to be a strong contender and turned the tables in the third set with a 12-8 win and trailed by just four points, 30-34, before running out of gas again in the late set, 4-13.
Posting the best record in the regular round gave SKN a straight ticket to the finals, while Mwaliyas had to beat Ochobu in last Tuesday’s playoff match to advance.
Mwaliyas, Ochobu, and Bwibwi each finished the regular round with 3-4 cards. Ochobu defeated Bwibwi Monday and advanced to play Mwaliyas.
Meanwhile, the WOR Community League resumes Tuesday night at the MHS Gym after a week-long break in observance of Holy Week. Teams competing in the league include two-time defending champion Ghasias Brothers, Shag, Just One, Chuukanos, and North Stars.
