Rain, rain go away…

For the third straight day rain again wrought havoc on the schedule of the 2nd Annual Toyota Tennis Tournament as only a handful of matches were completed at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Indeed it was a small miracle that six matches in the singles and mixed doubles even got done with the heavens opening up as periodically as it did Sunday evening.

Despite the cloudy skies, Buddy Garote finally saw a ray of sunshine in his so far star-crossed campaign in the Saipan Tennis Association-organized event when he defeated Eric Mahinay 6-4, 6-2 to move into the second round of the men’s 4.5.

The Garote-Mahinay duel was the only match in the men’s division that was completed as showers interfered with matches no less than six times, taxing tournament officials who had to dry the courts only to retreat when the rains fell again.

Minako Watanabe appeared well adjusted to the rainy conditions as she triumphed 6-3, 6-3 against Sue Reyes in the women’s 3.0.

Leriza Debrum, meanwhile, continued her march to the championship gaining a finals ticket in the women’s 2.0 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Tinian’s Jennifer Uy.

Her opponent in the finals will be a toss up between Mia Jones and Yuri Lida, who figured in the semifinals last night.

Mixed doubles was lucky to have three matches end Sunday evening. The highlight of the category was Dino Jones and Delia Johnson’s three-hour masterpiece against Tony Santos and Yuko Kobayashi in the 4.0.

In a bout interrupted by several rain delays, Jones and Johnson advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) win.

Manny Jaraplasan and Merle Hudkins, meanwhile, renewed their partnership and proceeded to make quick work of John Jenkins and Tonie Okawa 6-0, 6-0 in the 3.0.

That was nearly the same result churned out by the father-and-daughter tandem of Joe and Audrey Motto, who breezed past Ellen Uy and Jun Domingo 6-0, 6-1.
