Change of command at Guam base
SANTA RITA, Guam—Naval Base Guam will hold a change of command ceremony Friday, June 10, at 10am, at Flag Circle on Nimitz Hill.
During this time-honored Navy tradition, Capt. Robert McNaught will be relieved by Capt. Kenneth Freeman. The guest speaker will be Rear Adm. Arthur Johnson, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Marianas.
McNaught served as commanding officer of Naval Base Guam and Chief of Staff of COMNAVMARIANAS since June 2003. His next duty assignment is instructor of the Naval Reserve Officer’s Training Corps Unit at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
Freeman reports to Guam from Patuxent River, Md., where he served as deputy of logistics integration management of weapons, human performance, training, support equipment, aircraft launch and recovery equipment and air traffic control systems for Naval Air Systems Command.
The mission of Naval Base Guam is to provide executive oversight of waterfront operations, ordnance and other logistic support to fleet units and operational forces of the 5th and 7th Fleets, and to provide policy support and services to activities and personnel in Guam and the Mariana Islands area of responsibility.
In preparation for an upcoming ceremony, the Navy is informing residents of Nimitz Hill and surrounding areas that a practice canon salute will be given today, June 9, from 1pm to 3pm.
A second canon salute will be given Friday, June 10, from 10am to 11am as part of the ceremony.
Canon salutes are conducted without the use of live ammunition. A blank gunpowder charge, which produces smoke and a loud noise, is used instead. The sound produced by the charge is sufficient to be heard in surrounding communities and to activate car alarms in the immediate vicinity. The salute poses no threat to human health or hearing for any of neighbors of COMNAVMARIANAS. (PR)
