More than 30 teachers from San Vicente Elementary School finished their training yesterday on what is considered “high-tech” learning in the CNMI.

Visiting trainer from the Renaissance Learning group Sherry Hopkins is here for a three-day training at the school computer room of teacher Eric Engelskjen.

Engelskjen said the training is part of the professional development of teachers to update them on Accelerated Math programs, allowing them to monitor students’ learning inside their classrooms.

Engelskjen said the computer software programs would measure and provide results of the children’s mathematical and reading skills. He said SVES is looking at starting the high-tech learning process with 4th and 5th grades.

He said the Accelerated Math computer program would allow the students to practice their math skills. Students could work at their own pace to complete the objectives assigned them. The computer would generate worksheets that students must complete and answer on “scan cards.” They will then scan their work through a scanner and a report is printed immediately to let students know how they did.

Once students master the assigned skills, new objectives are then given them. The teacher would then come up with computer grade books that would let the students to know how well they are doing and what objectives have been mastered.

Engelskjen said this is their first time with the Accelerated Math program but they have been doing the Accelerated Reader program years before. He said Hopwood Junior High School is doing the same program.
