The time to pull together as a team on the tennis courts is now as the 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament serves up today, beginning with an opening ceremony 5:30pm at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.

Organizers estimate the ceremony will last some 30 minutes and expect the first matches to get underway at 6pm, with Boyet Minor’s Mountain Blast taking on Peter Loyola’s Lemon Lime.

Two men’s doubles and one women’s doubles match will be played between 6pm and 7pm, while a mixed doubles bout, men’s doubles, and an open singles match will be played between 7pm and 8pm.

Green Squale, led by veteran Eli Buenaventura, will then take on Strawberry Melon headed by Richard Asuncion between 8pm and 10pm. Like the earlier battle, the first hour of the Green Squale-Strawberry Melon tiff will feature two men’s doubles and a women’s doubles match followed by a mixed doubles, men’s doubles, and open singles.

Green Squale returns to the courts tomorrow evening as they square off against Team Mango from 5pm to 7pm, while Fruit Punch and Jagged Ice go head to head from 7pm to 9pm.

Action continues Sunday as Gold Rush battles Strawberry Melon from 4pm to 6pm and Mountain Blast takes on Fruit Punch from 6pm to 8pm.

In all, eight teams comprising of 88 players will duke it out for supremacy.

The 2005 Powerade Team Tennis Tournament is sponsored by Coca-Cola Beverage Co., (Micronesia), Inc., which is the exclusive distributor of the energy drink, and organized by the Fil-American Tennis Association.

FILATA president Elmer Guzman expressed his appreciation to Coca-Cola for their generous hand in sponsoring the tournament and said he has extended an invitation to the company’s sales and marketing director Kathryn Barry to attend the opening ceremony.

“This is a good tournament,” he said. “There’ll be a lot of excitement from the competitions of all the teams…we have new players and we’re all going to get a new experience.”
