THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and the Governor’s Water Task Force announced that a well in Calhoun, which provides water to a 500,000 gallon reservoir in Navy Hill, has been optimized for better efficiency.

Crews from CUC and the Water Task Force were on the site last week to work on reconstruction of the well.

The reservoir was only filled to about 20 percent when the crews arrived, according to the Water Task Force.

The 500,000-gallon reservoir supplies water to residents in Upper and Lower Navy Hill, China Town and Upper MIHA.

The Water Task Force will renovate and recondition the reservoir as well, and has issued a contract for an architectural and engineering design for a new 500,000-gallon reservoir that will be built near the existing one.

The new reservoir would provide water to parts of Garapan. Water that would be stored in the new reservoir will come from newly discovered water sources on Mt. Tapuchao and Navy Hill.

The Water Task Force and CUC were busy for the past two weeks optimizing water wells across Saipan. These included six wells in Sadog Tasi and Gualo Rai, which supply water to Garapan, and another one in Isley Field.

The Water Task Force was formed to improve the delivery of water service in the CNMI’s and has been working in partnership with CUC to achieve this goal. (PR)
