Good show in Powerade
Fans were given a good show in the Powerade Team Tennis Tournament Sunday at the American Memorial Park as four more teams put their skills to the test.
At nights end, Strawberry-Mellon and Mountain Blast left the courts on the winning side, but not before having to get through tough battles against opposing teams.
In the opener, captain Richard Asuncion and his Strawberry-Mellon squad downed Team Gold Rush, 4-2.
Asuncion teamed with Boy Cruz and placed their shots well in crunch time of their men’s doubles match and edged the determined duo of Hector Benitez and John Kintaro 8-7. Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Tim Quan put up strong numbers in his singles match and strolled to an 8-2 victory over Chris Chu, while Sally Cacdac and Asuncion made good on their mixed doubles push to earn a sweet 8-4 victory over Alex Martin and youth netter Thea Minor.
Win No. 4 came courtesy of Gerald Narciso and Mr. Heo, who put up just enough to slip by Dino Jones and Abet Encarnacion 8-6.
The two Gold Rush wins were credited to Letty Jones and Rose Pederson in the women’s doubles and Reo Arriola and Hector Benitez in the men’s doubles. The Jones-Pederson team had their magic work for them and cruised to an 8-2 win over Sally Wong and Aki Gotunda while Arriola and Benitez posted an 8-4 victory.
For their part, Boyet Minor and his Mountain Blast crew also left the courts with an impressive 4-2 edge over Fruit Punch.
Minor played well as the team leader and scored an 8-1 victory over George Poquiz in the singles and teamed up with Tony Santos to beat Fruit Punch captain Bert Ventura and Dennis Macatangay in the men’s doubles, 8-2.
University of Hawaii’s Amanda Weindl continues to enjoy her brief return to the island and teamed with Ji Hoon Heo to beat Kazumi Imai and Roy Banados 8-2 in the mixed doubles, while Ayumi Cajigan and Shinobu Furr went on cruise control and clobbered the tandem of Nelia Luna and Sadako Arriola 8-1.
Fruit Punch earned their two victories behind the play of Elmer Guzman and Jonathan Frasco, who fought hard and defeated Nigel Cacdac and Lito Cabrera 8-6, while Daniel Son and Matt Buenabajo trounced Gary Ramsey and Art Lopez.
