MX Championships hits Cowtown
The Cowtown Raceway Park is on ultra-busy mode today as riders kick off their push for supremacy in the 2005 Saipan MX Championships.
Hosted by the Marianas Racing Association, the motocross event unfolds today at 10am with riders from the Philippines, Guam, Saipan, Tinian, Japan, New Zealand, and Argentina taking center stage.
Although the event is expected to feature intense competition, a different setting was seen yesterday evening as participants and members of the racing association, and supporters gathered at the park for a barbeque get-together.
“We do this every year,” said MRA board member Dan Camacho. “We’re all excited and this is just a way of hosting the guests riders and just getting together and having fun. We know many of these guys because they are returnees…but [for] some it’s their first time.”
Camacho also reiterated that much work was put in to hosting the event.
“There’s just so much to do to host a competition with this kind of magnitude,” he said. “We began planning and working on this since January. For a non-profit organization, it’s hard but we’re fortunate for the support from the sponsors, the government, and all the help we got.”
As of the yesterday evening, all riders have arrived except for those from Argentina, however, Cama-cho said the country will be represented by the time the event kicks off.
Yesterday also marked the final practice day as the track was also closed for final preparations.
Sponsors for the much-anticipated event include Miller Lite, Pepsi, SaipanCell Communications, Joeten-Yamaha, Triple J Motors, Shell Marianas, Saipan Shipping Company, ERICCO Ent., Continental Airlines, DFS Galleria, The Rock 97.9FM, Power 99, and the MRA.
