TINIAN—The 10th Tinian Municipal Council decided to hold an art and essay contest in late May to get the youth involved in the celebration of the Tinian Nagasaki Hiroshima Peace Ceremony and the Peaceful Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary to the Atomic Missions to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

All entries to the art contest were based on the theme “Youth and Peace,” while the essay’s topic was based on the importance of learning about the incident that occurred in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Over 50 high school and elementary students participated in the event; however, only one essay and drawing were chosen from Tinian High School and Tinian Elementary.

The winner of the art competition for the elementary school division is Marquina Hofschneider, whose parents are Ernie Hofschneider and Juanita Mendiola. The winner of the essay portion of the competition in elementary school is Lynn Cruz, whose proud parents are Angelo and Librada Cruz.

“I was shocked, and happy, I didn’t think that I was going to win and I felt good because I worked hard for it,” said Cruz, winner of the essay contest for elementary school.

In the high school division, Kaisha Aquino’s art was chosen. She is the daughter of Felipe and Nora Aquino. In the essay portion Marjorie Daria’s essay caught the judges’ attention. She is the daughter of Juan and Lourdes Atalig.

The winners for the essay and art contest will be invited to the special Peace Candlelight Vigil that will be held on Aug. 6, to be properly recognized for their achievement. And, in addition, the winners of the contests will also take part in the “Hand in Peace” ceremony on Aug. 9, to kick off the construction on the Children’s Peace Memorial in Taga Park.

“The 10th Tinian Municipal Council would like to thank all the students of Tinian Elementary School and High School for taking part in the event,” the council said in a statement.
