Council cites AG’s Cup panel

The 8th Saipan and Northern Marianas Islands Municipal Council has adopted a resolution expressing its commendations to the 2005 Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition committee for their outstanding contribution to success of the 22nd AG’s Cup held at the Tinian Dynasty ballroom last May 6, 2005.

The competition committee was composed of Associate Justice Alexandro C. Castro, Arin Greenwood, Regina Andres, Kadya Peter, Lucy Blanco-Maratita, Roger Igisomar, Emma Peters, Bernie Dela Cruz, Celia Mercado, John Oliver Gonzales and Pam Buckingham.

The Attorney General’s Office is headed by Attorney General Pamela S. Brown; Deputy Attorney General Clyde Lemons, Jr.; Civil Division chief James Livingstone; Criminal Division chief prosecutor Jeffrey Moots; Investigative Unit chief investigator Joseph H. Aldan; and Division of Immigration acting director Antonio P. Sablan.

The 22nd Annual Attorney General’s Cup panel of judges was composed of Phillip Mendiola-Long, Special Assistant for Policy and Research, Office of the Mayor of Tinian and Aguigan; Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission vice chair Serafina King-Nabors; Finance Secretary Fermin Atalig; Board of Education member Marjalee Taitano; Northern Mariana College instructor Sam McPhetres; CNMI Bar Association president Edward Manibusan; and Associate Judge Castro.

The contest’s championship trophy went to Michael Awelemele Owen Deleon Guerrero, a senior at Mt. Carmel High School. Henry Chan, a sophomore at the Saipan International School, took second place, while Yveth Marie Mafnas L., senior, Calvary Christian Academy, walked away with third place; and Nina Mosley, sophomore, Marianas Baptist Academy, settled at fourth place.

Deleon Guerrero is the son of Edward C. and Eve O. Deleon Guerrero and was coached by Galvin S. Deleon Guerrero; Henry Chan is the son of Norman and Imelda Chan and was coached by Keith Tessen; Yveth Marie Mafnas L. is the daughter of Jose P. and Liberty L. Mafnas and was coached by Marilee Norman; and Nina Mosley is the daughter of Tony and Judith Mosley and was coached by Peter J. Coleman, JD.

“The members of the council and the people of the CNMI are extremely grateful to extend recognition, appreciation, congratulation and commendation to the contestants, coaches, parents, school officials, Office of the Governor, members of the…Legislature, Municipal Council of Tinian/Aguigan, Tinian Dynasty, sponsors and to those who contributed one way or another in making the 22nd Annual Attorney General’s Cup Speech Competition a great success,” part of the resolution read.

The AG’s Cup was organized by Associate Justice Castro, the first attorney general of Northern Marianas descent, to provide high school students in the CMNI a forum to express their view and position on specified issue affecting the people of the CMNI.

The resolution was certified by municipal council chair Gregorio V. Deleon Guerrero and vice chair David A. Indalecio and attested by secretary Antonia M. Tudela.
