The 2004 refund and rebate checks will be issued beginning this Friday and every other week, according to the Department of Finance yesterday.

In a statement, Tax and Revenue Division acting director Lisa A. Aldan said the first batch of “urgent” checks are expected to be released on July 15.

The first batch, she said, includes those taxpayers who provided proof of medical emergencies or death in the immediate family.

The regular processing of 2004 rebates and refunds, she said, will begin on Aug. 15.

She said the release will be based “on the earliest filing date of the tax return.”

“It’s first-in basis,” Aldan said, noting that any request for an expedited processing would only be entertained upon proof of an emergency case. She said claimants must prove or demonstrate “circumstances such as medical emergency or death in the family.”

Meantime, Aldan said that for those who receive error notices, they should promptly respond to ensure quick resolution of their cases.

Processing for prior years tax refund and rebates will continue as soon as errors are resolved.

Aldan said her office would be issuing updates on rebates and refund progress.

“We therefore request for your patience and understanding as we try our best to process your refund/rebate checks,” said Aldan.

The office said it finished issuing the 2003 rebates and refunds checks early this month. The CNMI government issues some $20 million in rebate and refunds every year.

Delays in the release of the funds took place in recent years due to the reported depletion of the Rebate Trust Account Fund in 2002.
