Nott joins Leong in first day singles
It appears like newcomer West Nott wouldn’t have to wait long for his baptism of fire, as the player from the Marshal Islands would see action in the first day singles of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group II set to unfold 11am today in Seoul, South Korea.
Pacific Oceania captain Jeff Race, of the CNMI, sprung a surprise in naming the former Georgia Tech standout as his second singles player, behind Michael Leong of Solomon Islands, for the tie with top seeds South Korea at the Olympic Tennis Court.
Oceania Tennis Federation executive officer Patrick O’Rourke said Western Samoa’s Juan Langton came off the plane from Australia with a severe head cold, which he has been unable to shake off completely, and so Race has decided to hold him back for the doubles on Saturday and give Nott his first singles match.
According to O’Rourke Nott has trained well throughout the week showing good form in both singles and doubles practice matches and his consistent style should be a good foil for the Koreans.
South Korean coach Gap-taik Roh also threw in a huge surprise naming his two youngest and lowest-ranked players for singles. Nineteen-year-old Woon-Sun Jun will play Nott and 18-year-old Sun-Yong Kim will player Leong, who is a year older.
The Pacific Oceania-South Korea tie would continue on Saturday at 1pm with the doubles team of Langton and Brett Baudinet of Cook Islands against Oh-Hee Kwon and Woong-Sun Jun. The reverse singles set to start at 11am on Sunday would then feature Leong against Jun followed by Nott against Kim.
