The U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Public Safety will again be distributing free gunlocks to registered gun owners on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to promote gun safety in the CNMI.

Both agencies formed a partnership under the federal government’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods.”

DPS spokesman Eric David urged gun owners to take advantage of the program by getting free gunlocks from Aug. 2-4.

David said the venue for the distribution of gunlocks would be announced later, but said that distribution on Saipan would take place on Aug. 2, from 9am to 12 noon and from 2pm to 4pm.

Distribution of gunlocks on Tinian would be done on the next day from 9am to 12 noon, David said, while that on Rota would be held on Aug. 4 from 1pm to 5pm.

Meanwhile, DPS range master Ambrosio T. Ogumoro said the department’s firearm training facility would be open on July 23 and 24 from 9am to 4pm.

During those dates, he said local gun owners would be given the opportunity to conduct gun function and serviceability checks, as well as gun shooting for recreation.

The training facility, located in San Juan, Marpi, would collect $5 from each gun owner who would use the range on those dates, Ogumoro said, adding that cardboard backing and targets would be provided.
