Sonics blowout Breeze, 101-62
Rowell Aranda and the Southern Sonics blew away the Capitol Hill Breeze by 39 points on Thursday evening at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium in continuation f the Rotary Basketball League.
After scoring eight points in the second quarter—including a three-pointer, Aranda went Anatahan after the half by scoring 18. As dominating as the one-man A-Team was, the Sonics also got plenty of offense from Mike Eclevia and Rayner Ferrer.
Eclevia racked up 14 points on the rubberized surface of the Oleai facility, while Ferrer went off with 12, but solid team play lead the Southern squad to victory as 11 of the Sonics 13 players posted points.
Despite picking up the loss, the Breeze got a standout performance from Syl Tellei who led his team with 22 points. The Capitol Hill cagers also had 11 of its players score on the Sonics, but Tellei was the only one of them who reached double figures.
After taking a week off, the Sonics return to the Rotary League when they face the Sparks on Monday, Aug. 29, at 5:30pm, while the Breeze hit the courts on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 5:30pm to challenge the G-Rollers-1.
Though the landslide contest closed out the evening with a bang, Thursday night started off with anything but a runaway as the Saints edged the Matansa Sparks by seven points in an exciting 58-51 match.
The two man wrecking crew of Luis Reyes and Jason Lizama accounted for 60-percent of the Saints offense with a combined 35 points, but Jose “Jojo” Ulloa and Juan Iguel rivaled the duo with 26 points for the Sparks.
The Saints took an eight point lead into the half and held on the rest of the way to earn the win, and Reyes took control of the game with 20 points while Lizama served up 15. Rick San Nicolas added six points in the second half, but fouled out to mar his contribution.
The Saints have to wait until Wednesday, Aug. 31 to play the G-Rollers-2 at 5:30pm in their next contest while the Sparks look for redemption against the Sonics on Monday, Aug. 29 at 5:30pm.
