Over $200,000 has been appropriated to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. for the development of power and water infrastructure at two homestead subdivisions on Saipan.

The Saipan and Northern Marianas Legislative Delegation adopted on Thursday a resolution funding utility services to the Dandan II Phase III and Kagman IV homesteads.

The appropriation, amounting to $209,188, came from the Developer Infrastructure Tax Fund.

Authored by Rep. Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero, the local resolution provides $53,943.19 for the extension of power lines to the Dandan homestead.

Another $45,895.49 was appropriated to provide power service and $74,100 to provide water service to the Kagman IV homestead.

“The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation is unable to provide these critical utility services to residents residing in the areas due to the unavailability of funds,” the resolution noted.

In related news, the Saipan and Northern Islands delegation also adopted a resolution requesting the Division of Sports and Recreation to create a program for the sport of boxing and the secretary of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs to set aside $10,000 to purchase a new boxing ring and equipment for use of the participants of the boxing program.

The delegation noted that many residents participate in boxing matches, competitions, and events sponsored by private companies.

“However, these events are not consistent and fall within the discretion of private individuals and businesses. The residents and youth of the Commonwealth do not have a program or a proper venue in which to train as boxers,” a portion of the resolution read. “Having an organized sport of boxing would encourage more residents to participate in the sport and to create new sports opportunities for the youth of the Commonwealth.” (Agnes E.
