The MARPAC-Nissan Titans and the Shell Lightning remain the only undefeated teams in the islands’ premiere basketball and football leagues.

The 5-0 Titans are on top of the roost in the ongoing 2005 Budweiser Cup BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League with its latest win coming at the expense of Bud Ice-Hoopholics. The Joeten Motors-backed team blasted the erstwhile undefeated cagers from Northern Marianas College 79-69 Monday.

The Lightning struck twice last Oct. 1 when it thumped the Tinian Typhoon 20-12 at the CPA Airport Field. In the opening day of the local gridiron wars, the Lightning shot down the Express Electronics Eagles. 16-2.

Last Saturday also was also an eventful day for Saipan runners as Saipan International School held its 5th Annual SIS 5K Fun Run in Marpi. The biggest winner in the competition was Marianas High School student Bo Wang, who reset the women’s course record with a time of 21:53.

Later in the day, the Saipan Little League Baseball Association once again brought smiles to the faces of the island’s junior hardball players when it held an awards ceremony at the Oleai Sports Complex.

Team and individual trophies were given away in all four Little League categories—Major, Junior, Senior, and Big—with the biggest applause given to recipient of the Sportsmanship award.

Rocball’s high school league also kicked off last week with Black Magic debuting strong against Malat. The inaugural Drug-Free Volleyball Tournament was also held last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium with Bananas and Senoritas snaring the top plums.

The week also saw Northern Marianas Athletics coach Chris Porco bid the islands goodbye after returning home to his native Michigan. Volleyball on the sand and on high school gyms also continued last week and so did the 18-and-under and Masters basketball leagues.
