Takawo takes top trophy in tournament
The fish were biting and the sea was inviting as 10 junior angles boarded the Sea Star Sunday to take part in the 7th Annual International Children’s Fishing Derby, but the fisher-kids bowed to Khaiza Takawo and her catch of the day—a champion fish measuring 37.6 cm.
The mini-reelers donned their dads’ raincoats and took to the waters in the rain like tried and true fishermen undeterred by the water above and below, and continued their fishin’ mission in search of the Pacific Ocean’s best bottom fish.
Takawo’s catch was almost a full 10 cm longer than first runner-up Francis Guerrero’s 28.4-cm wriggler, and second runner-up Jeremy Lizama’s 28-cm micro-Moby.
Takawo also bagged first runner-up in the Most Variety category with five species of squirmers, but it was one shy of the six-pack caught by Jonathon Sanchez. “Reel Deal” Sanchez didn’t stop there as he secured the Most Fish category as well with 11 confirmed catches on the day to edge first runner-up Khesler Takawo (10) and second runner-up Vanessa Guerrero (7).
“Despite the weather, the participants showed enthusiasm and hard work reeling in various bottom fish. Above all, it was a good turnout and everyone enjoyed the fishing tournament,” said Ed Diaz of the Marianas Visitors Authority.
The organizer’s main objective of the event was to introduce kids to the sport of fishing and to promote friendship with other sports fishermen, and with the help of Lt. Gov. Diego Benavente, Rep. Arnold Palacios, Rep. Joseph P. Guerrero, the 14th CNMI Legislature, CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife, the MVA, R&C Tours Saipan Inc, Hula Girl Ice Cream, Sea Star, Inc, Dollar Rent-A-Car, Saipan, Mobil, Ebisuya, McDonald’s, Pacific Development Inc, and JM & Associates, they were able to do so.
