The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library and the Library Friends will be holding a half-day book sale and tent sale today at the library parking lot in Susupe.

Library director Kevin Latham said that besides the usual book sale, there would be local vendors selling their goods to the public. The book sale and tent sale would only be from 8am to 1pm today.

Latham said the project aims to help the Library Friends, a non-profit organization, to raise money to support the public library. He said the organization is currently focused on acquiring grants from outside to finance renovation and construction projects inside and outside the library. Latham said all proceeds from today’s book sale will benefit the children’s library center, which is currently being constructed within the public library building.

He said the non-profit organization is responsible for the application of grants that would benefit the library. The group recently received a grant from the Administration for Native Americans and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that led to the construction of a children’s library.

Latham said that work on the new children’s library started three months ago and is targeted to be completed early next year. Called “Children of Our Homeland: Social/Cultural/Family Preservation Center,” the children’s library will feature sections for Juvenile Story Time, Arts and Crafts, computer and audio-visual center, homework center and collection, young adult reading station and teen issues collection.
