SHEFA posts 306 scholars in 2004, 2005
The Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance under the Office of the Mayor of Saipan recorded 306 scholarships and financial assistance awarded to CNMI students in Fall 2004 and Spring 2005.
In its executive summary report released late last month, 186 students qualified for the program in Fall 2004 and 120 in Spring 2005.
A total of $756,500 was provided to students during these two academic terms. At least $444,400 in financial assistance was given to students during Fall 2004 while $312,100 was given out in Spring 2005.
The report said the per-pupil revenue for the Fall on-island recipients amounted to $2,009; the amount was at $2,777 for the fall off-island awardees. The Spring per pupil revenue was recorded at $2,127 for on-island awardees and $3,048 for off-island recipients.
“The average combined per pupil revenue for Fall and Spring recipients topped at $2,490,” the report said.
Of the 306 recipients, the report said only 295 submitted original signed memorandums of agreement— essentially the contract between SHEFA and the recipients that obliges them to come back to the CNMI within 90 days of graduation from college to work in the private sector, in non-profit organizations, in the government or as entrepreneurs.
In the field of study category, education majors remained the top choice of the students, followed by business and liberal arts majors. Other courses taken by the awardees included Criminal Justice, biology, psychology, computer courses, nursing and medicine.
“The teaching profession still proved to be the top career choice among the Fall and Spring applicants,” said the report.
