Gearing up for today’s motorcade and tomorrow’s miting de avance, Covenant Party candidates and supporters flocked to the roadside of Beach Road, San Jose, waving at motorists, who responded by honking their horns.

The continuous honks and cheers created a festive mood, while supporters carried placards and posters bearing the names of the party’s candidates.

The event began at around past 4pm and was still on until late afternoon. The relatively high number of supporters stretched from the San Jose intersection until across the Oleai Beach Bar & Grill.

One week before the elections, Covenant gubernatorial candidate Benigno Fitial predicted a close battle for the gubernatorial race. He said that the evident economic hardships would be sufficient to persuade CNMI residents that change in government administration is necessary.

Both Fitial and running mate Timothy Villagomez expressed optimism about the crowd turnout and the people’s “positive reception” in their political rallies.

Today, the political group will conduct a motorcade on Saipan. Covenant advertising committee chair Charles Reyes Jr. said the meeting place for participants to the motorcade would be at the Civic Center’s tennis court at about 9am. Reyes said the motorcade would begin at around 10am.

Tomorrow, at the Civic Center’s tennis court, the candidates will again speak about their platform of government and their plan to address the CNMI’s ailing economy in their final political rally, an event also anticipated to be festive with live band, food and refreshments. (John Ravelo)
