It’s time to get creative and gear up for the unconventional as BSEA/Rudy Rudeger Grass Volleyball Tournament returns to the American Memorial Park this weekend with its unique blend of volleyball and the bizarre.

The semi-serious action gets underway tomorrow with the men’s and women’s doubles tournaments at 9am, and the purely fun co-ed four-person random draw event starts on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 10pm.

The cost to enter for both days of volleyball action is $20, but those looking to enter only one of the events need only bring $10 to the park. Membership has its privileges as members of the Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association receive a $5 discount on the entry fees.

According to tournament director Jon Cramer, there will be cash prizes for the tournament winners, but the amount will be determined by the number of participants. Cramer also said that the coveted Rudeger Trophy tournament trophy is “huge” this time out and the unveiling is not something to miss.

Organizers also remind would-be participants that costumes are welcome and encouraged.

Last time out Donn Dunlop and Gabriel White emerged from a pack of 18 teams take the two-person division 9th Annual BSEA Rudeger Volleyball Tournament by defeating Chris Nelson and Mark McDonald in the men’s division finals, while Linda Anastacio and Laura Burley smoothly sailed through their opponents to defeat Aleta Glaze and Ericka Komatsu in the women’s final.

As the popular tournament transitioned to the second day of events, the athletes were able to relax and enjoy a one-day round of mixed four person teams that were drawn randomly. The bizarre was the norm as players were penalized for positive play. Some of the talented players were hampered by goggles with blackened eyepieces, masks, boxing gloves, dresses, flippers, and an assortment of items designed to level the playing field.

In the four-person affair, Jon’s Driving Us Home edged the Unknown Soldiers, 15-11, as Jay Worrall, Anastacio, Danny Daniel, and Kaycee Rengaelur managed to overcome their artificial handicaps, while third place went to Fatty Tuna.
