Housing Taskforce chair John S. Reyes expressed some disappointment over the Marianas Public Lands Trust’s deferment on a proposed $5.8 million funding request for Plumeria Estate.

“We’re hoping that they would act on it last time but it’s been deferred,” said Reyes.

The MPLT board of trustees, in a board meeting Tuesday, voted to defer the loan proposal of the taskforce, citing among others the lack of the government’s ability to pay back.

The MPLT also gave consideration to the upcoming leadership change.

The Plumeria Estate is a priority project by the Babauta administration, which is exiting on Nov. 9, 2006.

The taskforce said earlier that it would tap the 702 capital improvement funds for fiscal year 2007 and 2008 to pay off MPLT.

The administration of governor-elect Benigno R. Fitial, however, may use this funding for other priorities.

Fitial attended the MPLT’s board meeting.

Meantime, Reyes said that the project should not be shelved just because it is proposed by a different administration.

He said the project is “very good” and “much-needed” by local residents, especially the first-time homeowners.

Plumeria Estate involves the construction of new houses at approximately 13 hectares of land in Koblerville.

Up to seven different styles of residential homes will be built in the area.

The requested funding of $5.8 million would be used for the utility and roadways infrastructure.

Plumeria Estates project is limited to prequalifying first-time homeowners.

It aims to provide 128 newly-constructed homes in Koblerville with two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes complete with amenities and infrastructure.
