Fishermen host Christmas party for man’amkos
A group of fishermen played host to man’amkos at the Office on Aging, treating them to an early Christmas Party with food and gifts.
The Chenchulu group, headed by J.E.T. Holdings Company president Juan S. Tenorio, said it has been its tradition to provide joy to man’amkos throughout the year, especially during the Christmas season.
Chenchulu literally means fishing net. Following the ban on fishing net, a group of fishermen who used to catch fish through those nets transformed itself to become an active non-profit organization committed to various community projects, Tenorio said.
Tenorio said the group has been providing services to man’amko, such as bowling, throughout the year.
“We feel that the activities are an important issue. Some of the man’amkos are sad. Some have no families,” he said.
At noon yesterday, Tenorio said the group hosted lunch at the Office on Aging for the man’amkos, who also received wrapped goodies to bring the Christmas spirit to the elderly.
Tenorio said some 400 people, including JROTC members from the Kagman High School, graced the event. He said the students entertained the man’amkos with their skills in marching and performing rifle exhibitions.
“The most important is the personal thought that we’re providing the man’amko—the Christmas spirit. They appreciate it. We want them to feel at home,” he said. “For some people, Christmas is sad for them. We want to lift up their spirit.”
