SSA women to bright for lights
The stars of the Saipan Softball Association’s newest brand of ball burned too bright on Tuesday night as the lights of Tan Ge Field went out to prematurely end the competition between the Mix-A-Lot and the Saipan Stevedore Rookies in the Women’s Island-Wide Slow-Pitch Softball League.
Mix-A-Lot was mixing it up with a ton of tallies as they led the lovable losers 26-1 in the top of the third inning before the cessation of illumination forced league organizers to reschedule the game.
The lights on high eventually came back on to allow for the continuation of the underhanded activities as the Hitters and It’s Okay provided fireworks in their weekday wins.
Lucy Aldan was a one-woman wrecking crew for It’s Okay as she pitched a complete game and powered out a homerun. Aldan allowed just one run off of eight hits, walked one, and fanned four through five innings from the rubber, while hitting 2-for-3 with a single and a two-run homer.
Aldan finished the night with three runs batted in and five runs scored, but she didn’t have to all of the work as teammate Norma Mira went 3-for-5 with a single, a double, a triple, and five runs batted in.
Mira was on fire, and shortstop Mercy Lynn Santos wasn’t too shabby either with a solid 3-for-4 performance at the plate in which she smacked a pair of singles and an RBI double.
It’s Okay took control of the game right from the start as they scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back. From then on out it was batting practice for the ladies of longball as they added three runs in the second and six in the third before erupting for eight in the fourth to take a 24-0 lead.
The Lady-8ers finally answered back with a run in the fifth, but it was far from enough to make a difference as the umpires put the players out of their misery by evoking the 10-run mercy rule.
Hitters 5, Pacific Amigas 1
The Hitters evened off their record to a pair of wins and losses to climb into a third place tie with the Pacific Amigas by scoring five runs off of seven hits in their head-to-head contest at Tan Ge Field.
Felisa Brel was the difference maker in the game as she held the Amigas to one run off of five his to pick up the win, but her teammates backed her up with enough offense to finish the job.
Designated hitter Nica Atalig went 1-for-2 with a double and left fielder Edwina Banlechong went 1-for-3 with a single to help the Hitters, but third baseman Angela Ngirbadul went 1-for-2 with a two-run inside-the-park homerun to give her squad an offensive explosion.
The Pacific Amigas drew first blood in the first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Hitters answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs by taking advantage of the Amigas’ miscues by scoring two runners who made their way on base through walks.
Both offenses cooled off during the next two innings until the Hitters added a pair in the bottom of the fourth for a little insurance.
