Floating hotel or commercial bldg. for Garapan Fishing Base?
By Thursday next week, the Marianas Public Lands Authority’s board members will decide on the fate of the Garapan Fishing Base in connection with two proposed investments, including the lease application of a Korean firm that wants to develop the property into a multi-million-dollar floating hotel and resort spa.
MPLA public information officer Ed Arriola, Jr. said the proposed investments form part of the board’s agenda when it convenes at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino next week.
The other lease application pertains to the proposal of another Korean firm to construct a commercial building, said Arriola, who did not divulge the identities of the applicants pending the board’s action on the fate of the Garapan fishing base.
Located across the Kristo Rai church, the 26,000-sqm public land has been the subject of inquiries by at least six potential investors, according to Arriola. Two Korean companies have submitted their respective proposals for their respective floating hotel and commercial building projects.
“MPLA is in communication with these companies ensuring that the proper applications and financial documents are submitted. Garapan is one of the few remaining parcels of public lands,” Arriola said.
The floating hotel project entails docking a boat that will form part of a resort spa hotel. Arriola said the investor also plans to develop a dock at the vicinity, besides developing the public land.
In the past years, an investor had proposed a similar project, but some fishermen met the proposal with opposition and instead pushed for the construction of a public market.
