Senate President Joseph Mendiola announced yesterday the appointment of the three non-administration allies to committee chairmanships in the Upper House.

Mendiola designated Sen. Luis Crisostimo to serve as chairman of the Committee on Public Utility, Transportation and Communications; Sen. Paul Manglona as chairman of the Committee on Health and Welfare; and Sen. Jude Hofschneider as chairman of the Committee on Education and Youth.

The heads of the six other Senate committees were named during the Senate’s organizational session on Jan. 9, 2006. They are all allies of the Fitial-Villagomez administration.

Senate Vice President Pete P. Reyes was appointed to head two committees: Rules and Procedure, and Federal Relations.

Floor Leader Felix T. Mendiola was named chairman of the Committee on Fiscal Affairs; Sen. Maria T. Pangelinan, Committee on Resources, Economic Development and Programs; Sen. Paterno S. Hocog, Committee on Judiciary, Government and Law; and Sen. Henry H. San Nicolas, Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations.

In last week’s session, Mendiola said he would announce the respective chairmen of the three remaining committees at a later time.

Although they have not signified any formal alliance with Mendiola’s group, Crisostimo, Manglona, and Hofschneider have been voting along with the majority in the past two Senate sessions.
