TSA hiring screeners for Rota airport
Beginning April 15, the Transportation Security Administration will begin security screening at the Rota International Airport.
Senator Paul A. Manglona noted that on Jan. 16, 2005, the Commonwealth Ports Authority gave its contractor the go-signal to begin renovating the existing airport facility to accommodate TSA. Renovation will include the expansion of the passenger departure area to allow for the needed screening equipment.
Quoting information from TSA-Saipan federal security director Rhonda Vickery, Manglona also reported that the federal agency is now recruiting passenger screeners for the Rota International Airport.
TSA will be hiring 16 new officers to staff the Rota airport. It will conduct a job fair for potential applicants on the Northern Marianas College’s Rota campus beginning 10am on Feb. 7, and 8am on Feb. 8. Interested individuals may also complete the application in advance by accessing the TSA website at http://tsacareers.recruitsoft.com.
In a letter sent yesterday, Manglona asked Rota’s acting Labor director Henry S. Atalig to share the information with his staff and Rota residents.
“Ms. Vickery has assured me that priority for these positions will be given to Rota residents who pass all TSA requirements for employment,” the senator said.
Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED, a background check, both physical and computerized testing, and for men, the registration for U.S. Selective Service.
According to Manglona, applicants who meet the requirements and who are offered employment will be notified sometime in March. Those who accept TSA employment will be trained to meet the April 15, 2006 start date for the implementation of security screening at the Rota airport.
“During these difficult economic times, job opportunities such as those being offered by TSA are a blessing,” Manglona said.
The new TSA officers will be paid a starting salary of $11.30 per hour for a minimum of 28 hours per pay period with potential overtime. They will also receive a 25-percent cost of living adjustment on top of their hourly pay.
In addition, the screeners will be entitled to retirement and health benefits offered by the federal government.
