After falling behind in the Women’s Island-Wide Slow-Pitch Softball League championship series, the Hitters scored back-to-back victories over Bomsoro to take home the trophy in thrilling fashion in front of a packed house at Tan Ge Field on Thursday night.

Knowing that they were faced with a do-or-die scenario, the Hitters rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take Game 2, 7-4, and forced a rubber match that enabled Pamela Riungel to take matters into her own hands.

With two recorded and trailing by a run in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, Nica Atalig drew a walk from Bomsoro’s all-star pitcher Jovie Omar. Making the walk an even more critical mistake was that Atalig was the last batter in the line-up—a spot usually reserved for the least achieving hitter.

With their backs against the wall and the game on the line, the Hitters sent Riungel to the plate with fingers crossed. The hard-hitting left fielder connected with a shot to the outfield that went past a diving Mary Skiling, and proceeded to round the bases for the game-winning inside-the-park homerun.

Riungel’s performance put the cap on a solid outing on the night as she finished 4-for-7 in the double-header, but she wasn’t the only one swinging away for the yellow-clad champions as Emy Quitugua went 5-for-6 with five singles and a pair of runs batted in.

What did not go unnoticed was the effective pitching of Felisa Brel, who kept the Hitters alive with a near flawless effort in Game 2. After giving up four runs on four hits to start the first inning, Brel held Bomsoro scoreless off of just two hits the rest of the way.

Aside from her hurling, Brel also added a pair of singles and an RBI in Game 2 before a 1-for-3 outing in Game 3 that drove in a run.

With the outcome of both Saipan Softball Association leagues already in the bag, the officials turned to the selection process of the all-stars that will represent the CNMI in the 6th Micronesian Games. While the result of last night’s closed-door meeting at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room were unavailable as of press time, SSA president Ray Palacios said that he will make an announcement regarding the team soon.
